This story starts with a bunion of all things.
Jeanne went in to our friend Dr. Theresa McEntee to have her bunion looked
at. Theresa said when was your last mammogram? "Oh", Jeans says,
"About 3 years", expecting Theresa to understand as Jeans is the one who
always has the van load of kids, including Theresa's, shuffling them to
soccer, or parks, or museums, or whatever. Jeans is the supermom and the
super friend. The one you can always count on in a pinch. So Therese says
"you are not leaving here until you walk next door to get your mammogram".
Fine. That was a Tuesday. They immediately made an appointment for a
biopsy on Thursday. By Wednesday it had settled in and we knew, it was
just a matter of the test results to come back.
MORAL OF THE STORY - KNOW YOUR TITTIES.
Jeans had a full masectomy two weeks later. She went to chemo and her
friends all fought over who would get to go with her. We would pick up a
soda and ice chips on the way. She had to chew ice chips when they put the
red chemicals in her otherwise she would get mouth sores like blisters. She
never complained. She never said why me. She was terribly frustrated at
being shoved in to her bed by friends and family who told her "You have to
get well". This was so true. Her boys were 7 and 10 years old. She is the
hub of our friendships, our carpools, our holiday get togethers. She had to
get well. After a long season of bed and chemicals and prayer, she did, as
far as we know. When chemo ended they told her there is a test she can
take to see if there is any cancer in her body. It is very expensive and it
doesn't tell you where it is, or what kind of cancer, or even what you can do
about it. So she opted not to get the test and we are assuming everything
is fine.
Everything does seem fine now and she is perky and back to being the hub
of things. However, there is still the bunion. Right after she finished chemo
and we felt she had the all clear from the cancer the issue of the bunion
came up. By that I mean it came up alot. I can not even begin to tell you
how much we have all heard about this bunion. Finally I went out and
bought her some gel soles hoping that would relieve her of the discomfort
and me from hearing about this bunion day in and day out. Never a word of
complaint abut the cancer, but the bunion - oh my lord! Fortunately a few
weeks ago she had that taken care of too.
Given the choice I would have much rather have just gone through the
bunion with her. Unfortunately someone you know and love will probably
have breast cancer in your lifetime. The statistics are just staggering.
